Turkey A RENEWED ACQUAINTANCE
Turkey is the link between East and West. Its geogrphical location has
always made this region a conduit for a wide range of cultures. At the
present time, no less than 72 cultural communities live side by side in
Turkey. It is a country where tradition and democracy go hand in hand.
To give one example, Turkish women have had the right to vote since
1934 - that is fourteen years prior to their Belgian sisters. In
recent years Turkey has openly had its eye on the EU. The debate on the
pros and cons of entry is extremely heated. The Centre for Fine Arts
does not get involved in politics, only in culture. We are turning the
spotlight on Turkey's diversity in an exhibition of cultural history, a
multi-arts festival and a colloquium. A pleasant renewal of the
acquaintance, with an eye to the finer points. There lies our
commitment as a European house of culture. Paul Dujardin

Empire. With muezzins and Byzantine singers. 28.10.2004 - 20:00 ERKAN

OYUNCULARI (STUDIO PLAYERS) ŞAHIKA TEKAND OIDIPUS SÜRGÜNDE
(OEDIPUS IN EXILE) Şahika Tekand heads the
experimental theatre group Studio Oyuncuları in Istanbul. In 2000 she
had an overwhelming success with her Oedipus Rex based on Sophocles.
The International Istanbul Theatre Festival and the Athens Olympic
Games 2004 has now commissioned her to rewrite Oedipus in Kolonos. This
Oidipus Sürgünde is conceived as a process. The main characters -
Oedipus, Kreon, Theseus, Ismene, Antigone and Polyneikes - present a
stunning elucidation of the essence of this Greek tragedy. And every
one of them is captivated by a single question: why was Oedipus
banished? Fifteen actors (the chorus) chant their lines rhythmically
and in crescendo, thereby pressing home their defence. The spectator
willingly or unwilling takes up a position. BOZAR LITERATURE 12.2004
> 01.2005 TURKISH WOMEN WRITERS IN EUROPE
'There is no such thing as a homogeneous European
literature,' suggests the Turkish writer Nedim Gürsel, 'You can at the
very most talk of European literatures, in the plural. The East and
West meet in Istanbul. Not so as to clash with each other, but in order
to fullfil a dream. Those on the periphery also belong in the dream of
a plural ethnic and multicultural Europe.' While European leaders
consider Turkey's entry into the EU, Bozar Literature is hosting five
women writers in addition to Nedim Gürsel (b. 1951). On three Thursday
evenings, Asli Erdogan (b.1967), Elif Şafak (b. 1971), Sema Kaygusuz
(b. 1972), the poetesses Bejan Matur (b. 1968) and Melisa Gurpinar
(1941) and Nedim Gürsel will talk about their work, their Turkish
roots, European literatures and the intellectual rise of women in
Turkey.
