Merhaba
It is time for lucidity We meet again with a new special edition
in English of Anadolu, a unique magazine in Belgium. For those who do
not know us, simply note that we receive neither support nor subvention
from anyone. Our team of volunteers enjoy a total freedom of speech and
work free from pressure exerted by the diplomats, governments and
politicians. We do not claim to be "objective". We are firmly
pro-European and pro-Turkish. We believe in a Europe which is
open-minded, multicultural and secular and to which Turkey belongs. We
are very attached to Europe's democratic and humanist values. Also, we
are very attached to the secular values of the Republic of Turkey. We
struggle for more democracy, human rights, solidarity, understanding
and integration. The EU will take a decision concerning Turkey's
accession at the end of the year. This decision will undoubtedly be
"historical" and with "no return" whatever its content may be. A "yes"
to Turkey will change the course of history in Europe, whereas a "no"
will prove a failure for everyone. In any case, we will then see
clearer, like in Cyprus, who says "yes" to peace, to stability and to
the mix of civilizations, and who says "no" or even worse, look
for solutions to gain time to maintain the status quo. Obviously, there
are criticisms and pessimistic views. We must not ignore them, however
we remain optimistic and confident. We expect a decision which will
certainly be "difficult" but beneficial to the EU and correct, honest
and fair towards Turkey. This long-standing ally represents the only
democratic and secular country within the Muslim world. There are a few
million Turks or citizens of Turkish origin living in the EU. We are
therefore greatly interested in and preoccupied with the
conclusion of this marvellous project of EU enlargement to which
participates one of Europe's most fascinating countries, Turkey. We are
very proud of our country of origin and its great potential, beauty,
ethnical and cultural wealth with its young, affable and patient
people…We would like to be proud of the EU too. One thing is certain:
at the end of the year, one will reveal its true colours, which is a
good thing. No one will waste time discussing unnecessarily anymore,
neither Turkey nor the EU. Whether it makes or breaks, there will be a
new start. And even if the directions and destinations change, it will
be better to move on and face reality. What Turkey and the EU need is
to look to the future and have a clearer understanding of it. This is
why all should reveal their true colours. The time has come
to take responsibility for deciding and accept the consequences.
We are confident. Dolunay Uluç Candan Marché Editorial team Aslı
